1. Making a Mountain (mp3)
On April 6, 2008 I invited visitors to CCA’s Open Studios to take part in a re-enactment of Allan Kaprow’s ‘Purpose’. With a mixture of sand, starch and hot water I asked them to make a mountain. I then asked them to write brief descriptions of their mountains. The following Friday, April 11, I invited CCA students to take these descriptions as lyrics and record them into a song.

The following day, Saturday April 12, I invited CCA students to move the mountains with brooms. In an attempt to acquire different sound patterns, we moved the mountains in different ways. We passed one mountain from person to person around a circle. We each took a mountain and moved them back and forth as a group, simultaneously. We pushed them down 15th Street to finish.

I then listened to the song on headphones and sang as much as I could interpret into a microphone.

Making a mountain of sand.
Moving it repeatedly.
Until there is no mountain.
Recording the work sounds.
Rerecording them.
Until there is no sound.
Listening to the tape.
I made a mountain with drips.
It kind of reminds me of chips.
Its a mountain populated by crips.
You can only reach it with ships.
Or you could ride on my hips.
With only a kiss on my lips.
If you want to reach its tips.
Slow slope with a craggy peak.
Although I was attempting more verticality.
I am quite sure that I would prefer climbing a gentle grade.
I have recently realized that although I love to look at mountains.
I in fact hate to climb them.
Two mountains are one.
One mountain is two.
Mud Dauber Mound.
Theme park mountain.
I wanted it to look like the mountains in Nevada.
That one sees from the plane.
Smooth, aesthetically pleasing mountain.
Molle: soft, something you can make an impression on.
The mountain has a valley next to it and then the ocean.
A toppy mountain.
A flatter mountain.
Perhaps making science fiction music. Lyrics: Clarissa Bynum, Brian Connelly, Ben Guttin, Allison Halter, Allan Kaprow, Anthony Marcellini, Piero Passacantando, Ted Purves, Joseph Tanke, Molly Tanke, Veronica Wiman
